This Course Requires A Stay In The Woods

Students living in the wilderness here are part of a university program, “Adirondack Semester.” Held each fall, it is a kind of domestic version of study abroad that Baylor Johnson, the program’s director, said aims to place students in an unfamiliar environment, and give them a break from what he called rampant consumerism and consumption of ecological resources. “We hope that when students come out of here they consider the fate of the natural world, which, in my opinion, is the greatest dilemma of the 21st century,” said Dr. Johnson, a philosophy professor at St. Lawrence.Students take classes in nature writing, the ecology of the Adirondacks and woodworking.
