This New President Is All About Design
On Sept. 12, John Maeda will be inaugurated as the 16th president of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, founded in 1877 as one of the country's first colleges to offer a combined education in arts and design. He emphasizes that he is the first designer to be appointed president of RISD, to say nothing of any college. Mr. Maeda has actually arrived with clear ideas about how to do his new job. He has launched an "open source administration" in which everyone is welcome to trade questions, complaints and observations about campus life and work online; he started a blog immediately so that the community could share in his first impressions of the school.
