According to a study by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, one-third of students who began their college education in 2006 transferred to another institution at least once before earning a degree. A student who attends a four-year university but takes a summer class at a community college would be counted as a transfer student, according the center.Students transferred most in their second year of college, and one-quarter of transfers crossed state lines, the study said. Administrators say the act of a student moving from a four-year university to a two-year college is known as a “reverse transfer” – a practice that’s become more common for students looking to save money while continuing to work toward their degree.
