Powerful Alumni In Battle To Change Board Structure

Even for an Ivy League institution with a long and storied history, it is remarkable that Dartmouth College has created such a stir with a governing fight: full-page advertisements in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, furious discussion among conservative bloggers and publications, a new Committee to Save Dartmouth College and charges of power grabs by a “radical minority cabal.” Now the college administration is reconsidering the entire trustee structure and in the process has set off a battle over whether alumni will be disenfranchised. Oklahoma Christian University might not be the place to work unless you are absolutely positive you'll never get divorced. That's because they instituted a policy that allows the president to terminate any employee who separates or divorces for any reasons that don't meet "limited scriptural grounds." A university administrator says this sort of thing would be rare, but is quoted as saying, "No one has said living a Christian life is an easy thing." Boston U Trustees Vote For Overhaul

Boston University's trustees voted Thursday to overhaul the board in a move likely to weaken former President John Silber's iron grip on the school he headed for most of the past three decades. The move follows last year's messy collapse of the school's presidential search, when the trustees hired former NASA (news - web sites) chief Daniel S. Goldin as president, only to back out at the last moment amid rumors of a power struggle between Silber loyalists and Goldin. Trustees said the deal with Goldin broke down after he questioned the financial relationships some trustees had with the university, and suggested they amounted to conflicts of interest.
