This Journal Proves High School Students Can Research And Write

William H. Fitzhugh, the cantankerous publisher of a journal that showcases high school research papers, sits at his computer in a cluttered office above a secondhand shop here, deploring the nation’s declining academic standards. His mood brightens, however, when talk turns to the occasionally brilliant work of the students whose heavily footnoted history papers appear in his quarterly, The Concord Review. The Keeping Up Web Site Is Now Up-To-Date

I've been receiving a number of e-mails over the last few months chastising me for having a web site called "The Keeping Up Web Site" that wasn't being kept up-to-date. When I moved from Philadelphia University to Temple University it took longer than expected to bring the site back to the point where it could be maintained, not to mention that I moved it to a unique domain and gave the site a major revision. But the site is now far more updated and KUAL readers may find it of interest particularly the section on higher education resources for keeping up. How Calhoun Keeps Up

In his latest column for Campus Technology, Terry Calhoun asks, "How do you get the news?" and talks about some of the resources he uses for staying up to date with higher education, world news, and more. I was surprised that he doesn't yet use RSS technology (but probably will eventually) - and that he neglects to mention Kept-Up as part of his regimen for daily higher education news. SmartClassroom Newsletter Debuts

The folks at Campus Technology have renamed their Teaching Enabled Technology newsletter SmartClassroom. It seems that courseware will still be the focus, but it appears to have been broadened to include presentation and display technologies. Feeling And Dealing With The Information Overload

Books are being scanned to make them searchable on the Internet. Television broadcasts are being recorded and archived for online posterity. Radio shows, too, are getting their digital conversion — to podcasts. Will all this instantly accessible information make us much smarter, or simply more stressed? When can we break to think, absorb and ponder all this data? While it contains comments from faculty and students this article is not specifically about higher education, but rather the amounts of information with which we are deluged. It ponders if having access to all this information makes us smarter or ultimately more likely to just settle for whatever information we find first - or just tune out all together.
