Plenty of students get a boost, such as athletes, underrepresented minorities, and children of alumni, but at least one "tip factor" rarely ends up in headlines: Students often get a leg up in admissions just for living down the road. Local students generate positive press, nurture town-gown relations, and may fulfill a sense of duty that the college feels (or has buried deep in its charter) toward the community in which it resides.
