At the 146 most selective colleges, only 3% of students come from families in the bottom quarter of income, while 74% come from those in the top quarter, USA TODAY reported this week. And as tuition climbs above $40,000 a year at private schools and $16,000 at some public universities, the income gap is growing, according to the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA. Increasingly, low-income students are going to less-selective but more affordable colleges.
