Students Walkout To Protest Loss Of Control Of Student Paper

The student editorial staff of the University of Georgia’s The Red & Black newspaper walked out Wednesday evening after a non-student was named editorial director with final say on all editorial content. The Red & Black’s student editor-in-chief, Polina Marinova, along with other top student editors and staff members, walked out after Ed Morales, who had been the paper’s editorial adviser and then became editorial director, was given full editorial control of the newspaper.Read more at:

Misleading Media Message Creates Public Relations Challenge For Texas A&M

This College Helps Prepare Foreign Fulbright Scholars For American Life

Kanda is one of 64 foreign scholars who came to New Jersey this week for a crash course on American life at an orientation hosted by Centenary College in Hackettstown. They are part of the Fulbright Program. Centenary is one of 10 colleges around the country selected to serve as a welcome site for newly arrived foreign students and scholars. They will spend a week at the small, private college learning the basics of living in America before they scatter to their host campuses around the U.S. to begin their studies. Bill Cosby Will Help Temple U Raise Funds For Financial Aid

Temple University will kick off a $100 million fund-raising campaign in the fall specifically targeted at financial aid, as it continues a concerted effort to roll back the cost of education. Famous Temple alum Bill Cosby has filmed several videos the university will use to urge its 275,000 alumni and others to donate and help a new generation of students attend school at an affordable cost. Campus Group Mourns Loss Of 300-Year Old Trees

About 15 people gathered on the edge of Virginia Tech's controversial Stadium Woods to commemorate the cutting of one of the forest fragment's several dozen large oaks, some of which are estimated to be more than 300 years old. Tech officials said the 85-foot-tall, 4-foot-diameter oak was cut Thursday because two certified arborists hired to evaluate it found that it was at risk of falling, and was a danger to people and property. The tree stood beside the Corps of Cadets rappelling tower and near a popular walking and biking trail. Read more at:

No pork, no more. At least, that’s the message atPaul Quinn College in Dallas. Paul Quinn, a small liberal arts college affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, has nixed pork products from its campus dining facility. That's the message of Michael J. Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College in Dallas. Well, part of the message at least - after all, Sorrell didn't ban pork from his campus dining facilities arbitrarily. Penn States Expands Background Checks To Many Other Prospective Employees

If you hope to land a job at Penn State, you will have to undergo a background check. That is the bottom line of a new policy that’s among the changes the university has been rolling out in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The changes apply to all new hires, regardless of whether the person works around children. While the previous policies covered some positions, such as administrators, faculty and some non-academic appointments, the updated plan includes students who have wage payroll jobs, graduate assistants, visiting scholars and adjunct faculty. City College Of San Francisco Urged To Avoid Accreditation Disaster

California's community college system Chancellor Jack Scott said Monday that it would be a "disaster" if City College of San Francisco lost its accreditation and had to close, and urged any reluctant college leaders to accept that cuts need to be made and do what needs to be done to save themselves. "The last thing we want to see happen is for you to lose your accreditation," Scott said. "That would be a disaster."

Too Many Students And Too Few Classes Decrease Four-Year Graduation Rates

This is today's reality at California State University, Sacramento: Classes are so packed and hard to come by that students have little chance of graduating within the traditional four years. Just 8 percent of first-time, degree-seeking Sacramento State students who started classes in 2007 graduated in 2011, the lowest four-year graduation rate in a decade. Sacramento State's four-year graduation rate has long been low, but it was improving before the school, in response to state funding cuts, became stingy about class offerings. Sacramento State has seen a $58 million reduction in state funding over the past five years. Read more at:

Despite Community Opposition University Will Build A Parking Structure

The University of Michigan envisions its planned six-story parking structure on Wall Street as a landmark that transitions drivers from downtown to Lower Town. For their part, the dozen-or-so Wall Street district residents that attended a meeting about the garage design Tuesday night would rather not see the proposed 'gateway' come to fruition.
