Low Enrollment Means Mothballing Dorm Facilities

Eight of the 17 floors at Eastern Illinois University Carman Hall are set to remain closed when Eastern Illinois University's fall semester begins on Aug. 17. Mark Hudson, director of university housing and dining services, said Carman's upper floors are being closed in an effort to use EIU's housing resources as efficiently as possible while enrollment is down. Creating More Housing Options For Transgender Students

The University of South Florida is offering transgender students the opportunity to live alone or with a friend of a different gender in campus housing. Beginning Thursday, students can identify themselves as male, female or transitioning on their housing applications. Anyone who checks transitioning can live alone, with a friend or with a randomly assigned roommate. A student's choice of transitioning won't be disclosed to any randomly selected roommate without permission. Read more at:

New Dorm Building Will Have Many Green Features

The University of Colorado's new $46.5 million dorm, set to debut this fall, will be the jolly green giant of the Williams Village complex. The under-construction Williams Village North will house two residential academic programs suited for students interested in environmental studies, and the building itself is vying for a top rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. Environmental features in the new dorm will include a solar-powered water heating system, LED lighting and light sensors, low-flow fixtures on showers and toilets, and zero-waste stations. Tornado Misses Campus But Leaves Many Off-Campus Dwellers Homeless

Dozens of University of Alabama students are living in the campus recreation center after a tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa on Wednesday evening and damaged several off-campus apartment buildings. The college town was one of the areas hardest hit by fierce storms and tornados that swept through the South. he tornado did not significantly damage the university campus, although many students living off-campus were affected. Students Fight To Keep Dome Housing On Campus

Students at UC Davis say the Domes won't get demolished without a fight. Residents of the funky complex of 14 igloo-like huts are waging a campaign to save their homes, which university officials have scheduled for closure July 31. The Domes were built in the 1970s as an experiment in prefabricated living. Generations of students have enjoyed a communal lifestyle there, surrounded by gardens and sharing vegetarian meals. But in its most recent effort to close the Domes, the university says the fiberglass structures are falling apart and would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix. Read more at:

At UC Davis The Days Of The Hippie Domes Is About To End

At the University of California, Davis, a funky 1970s experiment in communal living is closing this year while a 21st century eco-friendly neighborhood is rising nearby. The student housing projects – one homegrown by hippies, the other built by developers – bookend the environmental movement's journey from counterculture to mainstream. A university task force is working to develop a plan for new housing that incorporates the Domes' communal values, but it wouldn't be built for at least several years. Rutgers Will Create Co-Ed Dorm Rooms

Starting this fall, Rutgers University will allow male and female students to live in the same dormitory room for the first time in a pilot program designed to make the New Brunswick campus more welcoming to gay students. The pilot program will allow gay, lesbian and transgender students to choose either male or female roommates. Heterosexual students will also be permitted to live in co-ed rooms with their boyfriends, girlfriends or platonic friends of the opposite sex. The new option — called gender-neutral housing — was created at the request of gay, lesbian and transgender students. Read more at:

This New Dorm Includes Football Stadium Skyboxes On Top Floor

A groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. on Dec. 17 will mark the beginning of the construction of an $18 million, 120,000-square-foot residential facility by Nabholz Construction Corp. on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas. The “J” shaped building will also include three seminar rooms, two apartments, a large lobby area with a kitchen and laundry and study rooms. Newton said $2.2 million in private funds collected by the athletic department will allow for the construction of 12 20-person skyboxes on the facility’s fifth floor. Faculty Live In Dorms As Part Of Effort to Engage Students

Ramos and his family left their house in the Heights this fall for a two-bedroom apartment in Cougar Village, a new dorm for freshmen. Two other faculty members, Catherine Horn and Carroll Parrott Blue, moved into nearby Moody Towers. The faculty members don't pay rent, since their participation is considered a service to the university. It is part of the university's efforts to engage students and, ultimately, to improve graduation rates, in part by encouraging more informal interactions with faculty.
