Students Find Scholarship Opportunities From Their Parents' Employers

Ahna Sweeney, an intensely focused 19-year-old from Virginia Beach, started classes last week at Tidewater Community College. Neither she nor her family will have to pay a cent this year. Ahna's benefactor: her father's employer. Seventeen percent of employers offer scholarships to children of workers, according to a survey this year by the Society for Human Resources Management. Trunk Parties Are A New Fad For Helping The Transition From Home To College

They are becoming a staple of weekends between June and September, taking their place alongside bathing suits, vacations, and flip-flops. Trunk parties are hot. The soirees named for a piece of luggage once synonymous with packing for college symbolize the rite of passage from high school to college. The parties are goodbye gatherings to which guests bring gifts - anything from towels, irons, shower caddies, desk lamps, toilet paper, and notebooks to bedding, mini-refrigerators, and laptops - to help students make the transition from home to college. I know I sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but when I went to college, I took a couple of suitcases. And nothing was brand new. I used whichever sheets and towels my mother decided she didn’t need anymore. Well, things have changed. Now stores like Bed Bath & Beyond, Target and Walmart make it so easy to buy so much. They offer convenient college registries and remind you to tell your friends and family. In many cases, you order everything at home and it is all delivered right to your college. as with every other milestone in our lives, we have become convinced that we need to observe our children’s college transitions by purchasing things. A New Student's Long Walk To Freshmen Orientation

Gabe Acheson of Baltimore made a bold commitment in his Yale University admission essay. "If admitted, I will walk to Yale," read the first line. Yale said yes, and on Thursday, Acheson, 18, kept his promise, completing the last leg of a nearly 400-mile walk from his Baltimore home to Yale's campus in downtown New Haven. Acheson never meant his walk merely as a stunt to get into a prestigious university. In his essay, he explained that he wanted to do something big to mark the dramatic change in his life as he leaves home and starts college. Read more at:

To Get Ready Freshman Take Tutorials On Finances And Alcohol

 Incoming Western Michigan University freshman Brandon Weber spent at least six hours this summer taking three mandatory online quizzes about alcohol use, managing his finances and about the university.  WMU for the first time is imposing the requirement for the approximately 3,100 incoming freshman students. The quizzes are to be taken online by students before they move to campus at the end of August. Read more at:

Students Walkout To Protest Loss Of Control Of Student Paper

The student editorial staff of the University of Georgia’s The Red & Black newspaper walked out Wednesday evening after a non-student was named editorial director with final say on all editorial content. The Red & Black’s student editor-in-chief, Polina Marinova, along with other top student editors and staff members, walked out after Ed Morales, who had been the paper’s editorial adviser and then became editorial director, was given full editorial control of the newspaper.Read more at:

Students Stressed Out About Paying For Higher Education

Three of four students ages 14 to 23 have “some” or “major” concerns about how they’ll pay for college, according to a new study released Wednesday. The cost of higher education is so high that some high school seniors and their parents are questioning how they will be able to pay for it – or if it’s worth the huge expense.  Students in college aren't the only ones feeling the financial stress. The survey of 1,500 students by the Horatio Alger Association included kids as young as 14 and found that they had major concerns about paying for higher education. Read more at:

Online Survey Will Help Identify College Students At-Risk For Suicide

Counselors at the University of California are updating the way they approach student mental health. An online survey developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will soon be available at all 10 UC campuses. The goal is to connect at-risk students with campus mental health counselors before it's too late. AFSP estimates that 15 percent of college students are affected by some type of mental disorder. Students Moving Out Of Dorms Donate 42,000 Pounds Of Unwanted Items To Charity

University of Colorado students moving out of the dorms last spring donated 42,012 pounds of stuff -- fans, mirrors, snowboards, computer printers -- which is more than double the amount of donations made the previous spring, according to a new report. It could be a sign of an improving economy. In the thick of the recession, it appears, students were more likely to hold on to their goods, donating 15,354 pounds of reusable items in 2010 and 20,144 pounds in 2011. Read more at:

A Record For Campus Visits By A Prospective Student

TO find his perfect-fit college, Dan Shi traveled East Coast to West and crossed two borders (into Canada, for the University of Toronto, and England, for Cambridge). He visited 55 campuses and submitted 24 applications, including 22 to large engineering powerhouses. Excessive? Indeed. Counselors recommend six to eight applications, and just 5 percent of college-bound students submit more than 12. Read more at:
